Ah… the fun of it all. A few days ago I got my laptop back with a new video card and things have been pretty much back to normal. All except one thing: The machine doesn’t want to work in dual monitor mode anymore in Vista…
I’ve installed about 10 different NVidia Vista drivers – including drivers that previously worked – but nothing gets my dual monitor display to work. This is an Inspiron 9400/E1705 machine with an NVidia GO 7800 card.
Prior to the new video card dual monitor support has been shifty and would fail occasionally, but it was working once configured. When the new card was installed dual monitor support immediately didn’t work with the existing configuration although it certainly should have given that it’s the same exact video card.
Since then I’ve installed many new nVidia drivers all in hopes of finding one that actually works but no luck. What happens is the screen goes blank and although I have a mouse pointer that I can move between the monitors nothing displays otherwise. Eventually the driver crashes and resets the display but only after I’ve turned off the external monitor. Otherwise it goes into an endless loop of resetting the monitor/driver…
<sigh>
To be sure this isn't a hardware issue I put in my XP drive and sure enough the dual monitor support under XP works flawlessly – first try – so it doesn’t look like this is a hardware issue of any sort.
I supsect part of the problem may very well be that I've installed so many different drivers even before the card was replaced in hopes of finding that the original problem wasn't a hardware issue <s>... I suspect somewhere in all the driver mess there's some remnant code that doesn't clean up properly that might be the cause for this failures now. But a full reinstall isn't an option at the moment <g>...
Since this is a common configuration does anybody run:
Inspiron 9400/E1705
nVidia Go 7800
and have the dual monitor support working? If so what driver are you using?
