I'll be at Southwest Fox again this year in October in Phoenix to speak after not going last year due to schedule conflicts and I'm curious about whether there is any interest in Web Connection training. I've been considering putting on another 2 day training event for something a little different.
The focus of what I have in mind would carry a description of:
Building Responsive and Mobile Applications with AngularJs, Bootstrap and Web Connection
and it would cover the following:
- Building Responsive Web Applications
- Building applications that can be used on mobile devices
- Taking advantages of frameworks like BootStrap and AngularJs
- Dealing with the intricacies of optimizing for mobile -
mobile layout, scalable UIs, and building effective Uis that
work over multiple resolutions from mobile up to desktop - Creating FoxPro services that can be consumed by either
a Web application or native mobile device applications - Pulling it all together with a comprehenisve example
Unlike in the past this training wouldn't focus primarily on Web Connection but rather focus on HTML/CSS/JavaScript aspects and communicating with FoxPro and Web COnnection for its data services.
This training would be targeted at intermediate developers - you would have to have at least some HTML/CSS and JavaScript knowledge to make this useful, but the goal would be to walk through all the technologies from beginning to end and demonstrate how to put all the pieces together and choose the right technologies - especially if you plan on building Mobile applications or web apps. Ironically the Web Connection aspect is probably the least intense part of that, but the training would also cover in detail how to create FoxPro based HTTP/REST services using JSON that can be consumed by either a Web application or remote mobile devices.
This could be done as either a 1 day or 2 day event - although I think 2 days would be much more appropriate to also cover some Web Connection basics.
Curious to hear what you think and whether you'd be interested in attending. I'm trying to gather some idea of whether it's worth taking the time to plan for this sort of event as it takes a bit of effort and financial committment. 2 years ago I was planning on doing traing but the initial signup count was so low as to not make it worthwhile. Essentially the break even point (as I remember) is somewhere around 12 people...
If you have any comments and suggestions please feel free to chime in here. I'd like to get a feel of whether this is worth pursuing.

Your help and direction over the past several months on the topics below have given me a huge jump start into mobile development and the evolving would of HTML5.
Please consider adding in your presentation something on what Cordova can bring to the application. An area I hope to be getting into very soon.

The problem with presenting on Cordova is that you really need a mac (I have one but only a mac mini) if you're planning on doing anything with iOS. We'll see if that comes to pass.

It would have to be a pre-conferenence workshop due to the logistics of the equipment. I'm leaning towards 2 days since this seems to be the sweet spot. 3 days is too long for time off for many and there's the problem of a limited number of newbies that would attend the first day most likely.
Thanks for all the feedback so far. It looks like there is interest at least!
+++ Rick ---
Very strong probability that I would attend... Would prefer the 2 day option and would be willing to skip the preconference session in favor of this event.

I've resisted going the Visual Studio route, but vNext looks interesting.
It's getting tough to find a path - Polymer, React.js, ugh. I need a guru!
Through in modernizr and I'm there.

Very true, but I also think that if you need to build something now it's futile to just sit on your hands and wait for the next half a year for the next new shiny thing. While Angular 2.0 (and Aurelia!) look to make the dev experience much nicer the concepts and logic stuff you do today with Angular 1.4 will help you be ready when the next generation of tools arrives.
Especially if you are using 1.4 going forward (with the new router, controller as) code will be much more portable to 2.0. I think the big thing is that older stuff absolutely not portable but newer stuff is.
Personally I've found Angular 1.x plenty worth the effort compared to anything else I would have to do in the meantime.
I think no matter what you do TODAY you'll have some major shift happening by he end of this year as all JavaScript development is likely to shift towards ES6 using some sort of transpiler (Typescript, Babel etc.) and proper module systems.
Lots of change for the better coming into this space, which I think will make JavaScript feel a lot less hacky than it is today.
+++ Rick ---
I'm having reservations about Angular 1.4 when 2.0 will be a major rewrite - No migration path.

Hi all,
I'll be at Southwest Fox again this year in October in Phoenix to speak after not going last year due to schedule conflicts and I'm curious about whether there is any interest in Web Connection training.

It's getting late for getting this setup, but I'm going to check with the SWFOX folks to see what can be done at this point.

Two of us (Wade and myself) will happily attend any Westwind training that you put on in conjunction with SW Fox.
